A Tribute to WWII Veteran Benito Medellin

Honoring PFC Benito Medellin and the Heroes of World War II

This month, we proudly honor and celebrate the service of WWII veteran PFC Benito Medellin, grandfather of one of our MCL 1490 members. His courage, sacrifice, and dedication to our country continue to inspire future generations.

This Memorial Day, Marine Corps League Detachment 1490 along side Detachment 1277 will proudly honor the life and service of PFC Benito Medellin, a World War II U.S. Army veteran whose courage, sacrifice, and dedication reflected the very best of the Greatest Generation.

PFC Benito Medellin served with the 80th Infantry Division during some of the fiercest fighting in the European Theater. The 80th Infantry Division played a major role in Allied operations across Europe, advancing through heavily defended enemy territory and helping push Nazi forces toward final defeat in 1945.

Military records from April 27, 1945 document the extraordinary actions of infantry units within the division during combat operations in Germany. Soldiers and platoons fought through enemy resistance, captured strategic positions, defended fellow troops under fire, and carried out dangerous missions with discipline and determination. These victories came at a tremendous cost and required extraordinary courage from the men who served together on the front lines.

The honors awarded to PFC Benito Medellin reflect both heroism in combat and faithful military service during World War II.

Among his military decorations were:

Bronze Star Medal

Awarded for heroic achievement and meritorious service during combat operations.

Purple Heart

Awarded to soldiers wounded in action while serving their country in combat.

Army Good Conduct Medal

Recognizing honorable and faithful service.

World War II Victory Medal

Awarded to members of the Armed Forces who served during World War II.

American Campaign Medal

Recognizing military service performed in the American theater during the war.

European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal

Awarded for service in the European combat theater during wartime operations.

Army of Occupation Medal

Recognizing service during post-war occupation duties following Allied victory in Europe.

These medals represent far more than ribbons and metal. They represent sacrifice, resilience, loyalty, and service during one of the darkest periods in world history.

Like many veterans of his generation, PFC Medellin returned home without seeking recognition or attention for what he endured overseas. Yet the legacy of his service lives on through his family, his community, and the freedoms protected by his generation.

This year, during the 20th Annual Memorial Day Flag Placement at San Fernando Mission Cemetery, volunteers will gather to place flags in honor of veterans who served our nation with courage and honor. As each flag is placed, we remember not only names and dates, but lives of service and sacrifice.

We honor PFC Benito Medellin and the soldiers who stood beside him. We honor the platoons that fought together through impossible conditions. We honor a generation that answered the call when the world needed them most.

Their sacrifices will never be forgotten.
